Fellow librarian here and, man, millennial loyalty to HP runs DEEP. I am always shocked by the number of pride-flag—pronoun-displaying!—ally-type people come in asking for Queen TERF.
I agree with your assessment of the cozy aesthetic. I think a lot about these topics but thought about trad wife being opposite to cozy, but I think you’re right. Also interesting/true point about how the “I’m just staying in/this is my Friday night *pic of cat on your lap and tv on and snacks*/I hate people lol!!” thing is not cute anymore…it’s sad! We are dying of loneliness here, people! We’re addicted to screens! We’re experiencing the total breakdown of community! Maybe don’t…revel in it!
Curious what you think of the minimalism influencers and how they fit into the capitalist scheme. That was the rabbit hole I was living in while on instagram. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it because they weren’t quite encouraging you to buy things but…there was something off there. It was too beige. There were too many bins. 🤔
Thanks for your thoughts! I believe minimalism is also a hyper capitalist ideal, “staples” are often pushed each year therefore no stop to buying. As a fellow non-practicing MLIS holder i completely understand the HP statement!!
i went into a home goods once. it was not at all how you would imagine it.
in a more serious note, i understand you can't really do tiktoks of cozy content with lots of friends in them - but what happened to showing how cool your life is? what's cooler than having friends? :) something to think about while i play my switch later.
I find it so fascinating that self care being an act of resistance came from Audre Lorde’s experience with cancer and has been distorted by white creators, especially while Black women are expected to continue to lead and sacrifice themselves to do so. When their only act of resistance is self care, and it actively detaches them from the community self care is supposed to enable them to help, what does it really become?
I love your writing, it challenges me and helps me remember the consequences for being too housey/cozy. Community is truly made face to face!
Thank you for reading!!
this was an amazing deep dive and made me want to do a literary analysis on the next trend i see on tiktok
Thanks for reading! 🩷
